About Me

S.Chandrasekaran

Dr. S.Chandrasekaran is an accomplished academic with eighteen years of teaching experience in the field of arts education. He obtained his doctorate from Curtin University in 2007. Over the years, he had held several academic positions both in Singapore and overseas institutions. Currently, he is Head, McNally School of Fine Arts at LASALLE, College of the Arts, Singapore.

He had represented in major exhibitions such as Havana Biennial (Cuba), 1st Asia Pacific Triennial (Brisbane), Asia-Pacific Performance Art Festival (Canada), International Performance Art Festival(Poland), 49th Venice Biennale, and 8th Festival of Contemporary Art (Slovenia) and  Singapore Biennale 2016. He had worked on two major public artworks, World Sculpture Park at Changchun, China in 2001 and Little India MRT Station, Singapore, 2000. In 2019, he performed at Taipei University of Arts for the New Ben Arts Festival.

 In 2003, his performance art work titled Bioalloy and Body Performance was nominated for APBF Signature Art Prize (Singapore). He has been invited to attend several international conference and seminars – Biennale of Electronic Arts (Australia), 3rd Asia-Pacific Arts conference (Taipei) and XIV International Congress for Aesthetics (Slovena) and University of South Wales (Sydney). In 2015, he was invited as a keynote speaker for Cross Media Arts 2016 – 1st international Conference on Social Arts and Trans-disciplinarity at University of Evora, Portugal. In 2019, he was invited by University of Copahengan for Interdisciplinary Conference.

He is a Founder/Artistic Director for Biological Arts Theatre (BAT), which is a new media experimental theatre for Life Science, and Arts. His research interests are

  • To undertake research by collecting historical or geographical data of Orang Suku Laut. Also, It is about archiving stories that been told through myth, legends and folklores.  These stories bring out the veracity about the living that lies between two natural forces – land and sea

  • Research Focus:  To create a  Research-Oriented Theatre, Biological Arts Theatre

  • As the Artistic Director/Founder of Biological Arts Theatre (BAT), I launched the production titled Infinite Saree. BAT is a practice-led research platform that explores Asian Aesthetics through theatre, music and dance with technology and Life Science. With Infinite Saree project, I introduced the therukootu to examine the following issues – the vocabulary of Theatre practice in relation to Life Science and 3D film, the principles and application of research methodology in both disciplines and the argument/conformity for the association of the two disciplines. By doing so, we managed to bring two main outcomes, which provided new interpretations to Asian theatre practice and research – DNA Carnatic and DNA Saree

  • Research Title : 6th Finger
  • Research Focus:  To create a new genre in art practice through Science and Art.

  • As a principal research, I was awarded a residency at SymboticA, UWA for a period one year. The project tilted was 6th finger, a new media exploration through scientific investigation. The project was designed to grow a plant out of animal cells.

  • Research Focus:  Artist Research Project to explore Asian Aesthetics

  • As a principal Researcher, I initiated a research project titled Wax City, which was supported by Contemporary Asian Arts Center. The project was undertaken with the following artists from various disciplines: Ahmed I, specializing in Asian film and television production; Restu Imansari Kusumaningrum, an Indonesian dancer/choreographer and landscape architect working with traditional and contemporary dance languages; Angelia Liong, a dancer/choreographer concerned with redefining the dance performance space in an Asian urban environment; Joyce Teo, an ethnomusicologist who specializes in gamelan music of Indonesia, and Venka Purushothaman, a writer dealing with contemporary  theories on urban and cultural spaces The project was aimed to explore the complexities that lies in exploring Asian Aesthetics.
